What is Carnosine?

Carnosine, also known as L-Carnosine is a natural antioxidant, made of the amino acids beta-alanine and histidine. Other names for it include:

  • B-alanyl-L-histidine
  • B-alanyl histidine
  • Beta-alanyl-L-histidine
  • Carnosina
  • N-Acetyl-Carnosine
  • N-Acetyl-L-Carnosine.

It is only found in animal tissue, including brain, and muscles. As such, vegetarian diets tend to lack in this nutrient, but it is not known if this has a negative effect on the body or not. Early research indicates this nutrient is beneficial in a variety of scenarios, including: anti-aging, central nervous system health, eye health, and liver health.

Forms of Carnosine

Carnosine is naturally occurring within the body, and comes from animals, so most people who eat meat will be able to get enough in their diets through food consumption. Otherwise, it can be found in supplement form. Supplements are available in liquid, capsule, and tablet forms. The liquid form is a good option for people who have trouble with swallowing pills, or for people who want to mix the nutrient into their smoothies, shakes, and green drinks as part of a healthy diet.

Further research studies need to be conducted to provide concrete evidence, however, carnosine is being used to:
